
Description
Common warts are called verrucae vulgaris. Though they are unsightly, warts are harmless and many disappear without treatment within a two-year period. They are much more common in school-aged children and young adults than in older people.
Warts are caused by one of the more than 60 varieties of human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus, which is transmitted by direct contact that is, touching another person’s wart-causes rapid multiplication of skin cells in the infected area.
Signs and Symptoms
- Small, hard lump(s) on the skin that are flesh toned, with perhaps a pinkish or whitish cast
- Though warts can occur anywhere on the body, they most commonly appear on the hands, fingers, knees, and feet
Conventional Medical Treatment
Many warts to go away by themselves in six months to two years. before seeing a dermatologist, you can try over-the-counter topical products that contain salicylic acid, lactic acid, or glycolic acid. These medications work by sloHghing off the infected skin cells and usually take about three months to fully eradicate a wart. In more severe cases, a dermatologist can remove warts by freezing, cutting out the affected tissue, or laser treatments. Regardless of the treatment, warts will return in approximately one-third of all cases.
